Postgraduate Research Ethics Workshop
Research Ethics and the Practicalities of Doing Fieldwork in Russia, Central and Eastern Europe
UCL, 30th October 2010
Ethics are an integral part of social research and occur both during and after fieldwork and are often unforeseen. The main aims of the workshop, organised by Dr. Ulrike Ziemer (CEELBAS Postdoctoral Research Fellow), were to bring together academics and research students to exchange ideas and experiences relating to ethical issues during and after fieldwork, and to supplement methods teaching across the CEELBAS Network. Thirteen papers were heard and discussed, covering (1) ethics and researching migration; (2) ethical issues and research on fringe groups; (3) ethics and positionality in ethnographic research; (4) ethics, elites and interviews: in and after the field; (5) film, archives and research ethics.
Discussions were lively and gave participants the opportunity to address ethical issues concerning their own research projects and to receive feedback from experienced researchers. Thus, this workshop contributed to the CEELBAS aim of furthering multi-disciplinarity within the Russian and East European context in relation to ethical issues. Plans for an online CEELBAS guide to ethical issues during and after fieldwork were positively welcomed by all participants.
